The days of the week are based on Roman naming (which in turn was based on …)

Monday: Moon day, translation of Latin
Tuesday: Tiu’s day, translation of day of Mars. Tiu was the Germanic god of war
Wednesday: Woden’s [Odin’s] day, translation of day of Mercury, Odin being equated to the god Mercury.
Thursday: Thor’s day, translation of day of Jupiter (both gods of the sky)
Friday: Freya’s day, goddess of married love, translation of day of Venus
Saturday: Saturn day, direct translation of Latin
Sunday: Translation of Roman day of the sun

Goodbye: contraction of ‘God be with ye’.
