Many of our learners who come on 1 or 2 week adult courses want to focus very much on practising their speaking and gaining confidence. What does this mean for the balance of your ‘syllabus’?
In our experience the following balance (very approx of course) often proves a successful formula for many General English and General English plus Culture courses:
80% speaking (discussions, role plays, presentations, games etc)
10% vocab (activating student’s half-forgotten vocab plus some new)
5% grammar (taught remedially at the end of a lesson, main issues only)
5% pron (taught at the time or ‘saved’ until another time, especially word stress)
In addition, the cultural experience is often high on the agenda so wherever possible integrating the learning and the out-of-lesson activities should help.
